Hosted as part of the American Society for Nutrition’s NUTRITION 2020 LIVE ONLINE
During this virtual interactive workshop Ms. Jennifer Crum from FHI360, Dr. Rasmi Avula from IFPRI, and Dr. Ame Stormer from Helen Keller International, shared their real-world experiences responding to the challenges faced by nutrition programs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the live discussion period, SISN Board Members Dr. Edward Frongillo, Dr. Kenda Cunningham and Dr. Andrea Warren fielded questions to the expert speakers from a very engaged audience and highlighted emerging themes to explore in the coming months and years.

A focused ethnographic study: investigating the barriers to antenatal care attendance to improve iron and folic acid supplementation in Kenya
In this webinar, hosted by our colleagues at the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), SISN Vice President, Dr Gretel Pelto provided an overview of focused ethnographic studies (FES), and Zipporah Bukania and Brian Njoroje from the Implementation Science Initiative (ISI) Team in Kenya presented how they applied the FES approach to examine the barriers for early initiation of focused antenatal care (ANC) through the Baby-friendly Community Initiative (BFCI).
Following these presentations, SISN Senior Technical Lead, Isabelle Michaud-Letourneau facilitated a lively 20-minute Q&A period.

Improving Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation Through Quality Improvement: A Type III Effectiveness-implementation Hybrid Study
In this webinar, Geoffrey M. Curran, Director of the Center for Implementation Research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), and an expert on effectiveness-implementation hybrid designs, provides a brief introduction to this innovative approach and it’s 3 sub-types.
Following this introduction, Nathan Tumwesigye and Moses Tetui from the Implementation Science Initiative (ISI) Team in Uganda describe the quality improvement approach and implementation strategies used to support the delivery of the iron-folic acid supplementation (IFAS) intervention, and shared the preliminary findings from the baseline data collection of their Type III effectiveness-implementation study.
Following these three presentations, participants posed their questions in an open 20-minute discussion facilitated by Isabelle Michaud-Letourneau, SISN Senior Technical Lead.

The Consortium of Universities for Global Health Webinar on Implementation Science in Nutrition
This webinar presents the frameworks and principles of implementation science as developed by SISN and illustrates their application by teams of government actors, researchers and implementers in two countries. Learning About Needs of and Challenges Faced by Program Workers and Recipients: A Case Study of Observational Implementation Research
Our guest speakers, Dr Andrea Warren and Dr Ed Frongillo from the University of South Carolina presented a case study of observational implementation research (IR) for food-assistance programs in the United States and programs for infants and young child feeding in Kenya and India.
Following the 35-minute presentation attendees engaged in a lively discussion during a 20-minute Q&A session, moderated by Dr Rasmi Avula, Research Fellow in the Poverty, Health, and Nutrition Division at IFPRI.
How to Build Effective Cross-sector Partnerships
Our guest speaker, Ms Helga van Kampen from the Partnership Brokers Association shared her knowledge and experience through a lively discussion on partnering and principles and how these can be applied to implementation research. Following the 40 minute presentation, participants posed their questions in a lively Q&A moderated by SISN’s Secretary/Treasurer, Dr Eva Monterrosa.
Understanding Program Adaptation: A Scoping Study of Frameworks and Systematic Review of Adapted Evidence-based Interventions
Our guest speaker, Dr Cam Escoffery from Emory University presented definitions of program adaptation, frameworks guiding it and shared her own research in this area. During the Q&A, moderated by Dr Wendy Gonzalez from GAIN, participants explored the relevance of this work to implementation in nutrition .

Chaired by Dr Gretel Pelto, the webinar consisted of three short presentations illustrating how IR has been used to enhance outcomes in a number of different settings. The presentations illustrated how the initiatives ‘map’ into the SISN Framework and were followed by an audience Q&A.
